This kit represents a Great Northern Railway Composite Coach (Diagram 189, D189).
This 45 foot coach built to diagram 189 (D189) was one of several similar vehicles which were designed for the GNR in the 1890’s. This vehicle combined third class, first class and a guard’s compartment. This vehicle is described in “Historic Carriage Drawings” Volume 1 by N. Campling. ISBN 1 899816 04 6 page 94.

NER Third (Diagram 15): This type of carriage was the most numerous vehicle produced by the North Eastern Railway (NER). Approximately 1000 examples of this type of carriage were produced from the mid 1880’s until 1895. A drawing of this vehicle exists at the National Railway Museum (LNER drawing 1829D, formerly NER drawing 68a). This drawing was referred to during the design of this model.

NER Luggage Third (Diagram 13): These carriages were very similar to Diagram 15 thirds, see our produuct NE04-D015. One passenger compartment was replaced by a luggage compartment. A drawing of this vehicle exists at the National Railway Museum (LNER drawing 1830D, formerly NER drawing 71a). This drawing was referred to during the design of this model. Originally, the livery would have been standard NER maroon with yellow lining. Roofs were white when new.

This model represents a Guards can with two third class compartments (diagram 20). The NER inventory contained about a hundred similar vehicles in the 1890's.This carriage was one of a series of 32ft six wheeled carriages which were designed and built by the North Eastern Railway in the latter part of the 19th Century. They used a standard underframe and replaced earlier vehicles.
